Are you one of the 50%
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has just released data which indicates that almost 50% of
Americans, or approximately 64.7 million of us, have some form of periodontal disease. These figures are much higher than any previous study, which is attributed to the rigorous methodology used by the CDC. The CDC survey included a full-mouth periodontal exam, while previous studies included only partial mouth examinations. According to Dr. Pamela McCain, President of the American Academy of Periodontology, “This is the most accurate picture of periodontal disease in the US adult population we have ever had.”
Most of us are aware of how serious periodontal (gum) disease can be. When plaque, a sticky bacterial film, is allowed to accumulate between each tooth and the surrounding gum, pockets of infection are created, and the result is inflammation. There is irrefutable scientific evidence to show that this inflammatory response may negatively influence systemic health concerns including heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and certain forms of cancer.
Regular cleaning by our dental hygienists, along with proper home care, can go a long way to preventing and controlling gum disease. Please make sure you schedule and keep your regular checkups and that you maintain an effective home care regimen of brushing, flossing, and rinsing.
